Can you grind other things besides meat in a meat grinder?
Question by Michelle:
Can you grind other things besides meat in a meat grinder?
we are looking for a heavy duty grinder for food. we need a grinder to grind up roots into powder, and we don’t think that a coffee grinder will do the job.
can we put things besides meat in a meat grinder?
if not, what would you suggest grinding roots in?
we are looking for an electric grinder.
thank you.

Which police department’s jurisdiction are you in again?
a meat grinder won’t grind up roots. You’ll have to grind it up the old fashioned way of cutting it into sections and then pounding it, however, if in tiny sections a good coffee grinder will probably work.
try an electric coffee grinder, iv ground many herbs in mine and its still going strong!
You can grind nuts, coffee beans and cranberries in a meat grinder, grain might even work.
Depending on the size of the roots, you might be able to use a coffee grinder if the pieces of root are small enough.
I use my coffee grinder for whole cloves, coriander seed and star anise seed
A meat grinder will work, you just need a heavy duty grinder with heavier blades. They make little “hammer mills” which work beautifully for what you’re trying to do, but are very expensive. Track down a local appliance shop that works with high end/industrial appliances to find out who makes these mills and then look online for a good price.
You can grind anything in there. Just make sure to wash it thoroughly after each use. I actually put raw cranberries in mine to make cranberry salad. So yeah, pretty much anything will grind up in there. But it will not grind it powder-fine. You will likely need to process it again in a food processor or coffee grinder to get it into a powder.
